Buzz Off, Mr. Morris!

"Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."

This quote by the 19th-century English designer, writer, and artist William Morris has been a guiding principle in my life.

It has helped shape what I buy, what I keep, and what I give away.

But sometimes it's also held me back.

Like the other day, when I was cleaning the crumbs out of my cutlery holder:

My brown. Rubbermaid. Plastic. Cutlery holder:

This godawful piece of plastic has been uglifying our kitchen drawers for more than 30 years:

Three decades!

But it was totally useful, and I don't like to buy things needlessly, so I let the tray stay.

And then, once more wiping out the crumbs and pug hairs, I just snapped.

Enough!

Enough of looking every day, several times a day, at a butt-ugly thing that makes me go "Grrrrr!" every time I see it.

Life's too short.

So I took my $5-off coupon to Bed, Bath, & Beyond, and I bought a useful AND beautiful new cutlery tray made of bamboo for less than $10.

Now when I open this drawer, I smile.

Every single time.

  1. Yes!! ...and isn't it amazing how something that simple can lift one's spirits and change one's outlook on the mundane daily routine of housework (talk about an inexpensive remodel!). I'm thinking it may be time to retire my similar yellow plastic flat wear holder of so many years! (Hope I can find one that will fit my funky-sized drawer.)
